Pre-Departure Steps

Pre-Departure Steps

The first and hardest steps of pre-departure preparation have been 1) purging our home, 2) listing our many responsibilities and accounts to settle up, and 3) preparing our hearts to say “so-long” to many dear friends whom we will miss sorely. The busy-ness of logistics planning helps to keep the sadness of goodbyes at bay, though we have all had moments of melancholy.

Our past weeks have focused on:

  • Schooling options for the kids – online high schools and home school curriculum
  • Finding the right language school and volunteer opportunities for our first month in Ecuador
  • Getting our house ready to rent out
  • Completing work commitments
  • Hiring a student intern for Carrie’s business
  • Switching healthcare insurance, car insurance, and visa cards
  • Getting new passports for the kids
  • Updating our computer and camera equipment for maximum mobility
  • Researching Ecuador and Peru – making contact with friends of friends

The work continues on all of those fronts. We will buy airline tickets soon for a mid-March departure.

    Carrie,
You and your family are already missed by all of us here. I’m so sorry I didn’t get to see or talk to you before you left. We regretfully missed your going away bash due to Coleman’s Church tournament games. The tournament seemed to go on forever that day and, well…after they were over, we just all crashed out on the living room sofas. I do regret it now that you’re gone, as do Ben and the kids. Cole says “hi” to Adam. He’s going to try to keep in touch with him through this site.
Have a safe and productive trip. You’re all in our prayers and we can’t wait for you to get back home in December and bring this community back alive with all of your wonderful stories.

Love & peace to all of you,
    Jodie

Carrie, we have only met a few times at Ladies Who Lunch, but I just want to say again how incredibly impressed I am with your familys decision to take on this adventure. I look forward to hearing how it progresses, and I know for you that this one of the best gifts you will ever give your family…especially your kids. Only in retrospect can we see the impact of these “jump into Life” opportunites, but I am sure this one will be amazing for you all! Safe travels!
