Nomads

Ccampa-Nevado-Summit-picks-011When I get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, I have no idea where I am nor which way to turn. We are in the middle of a two month stint of traveling, experiencing the challenges and freedom of nomads. Carrying all of our belongings in backpacks and “immigrant sacks”‘  we hop on and off of buses without a clue as to the characteristics of our destination. We’re together 24/7, enjoying the relationships but at times craving individual space.

In the next few weeks we will decide where we want to plant our feet for five months in Ecuador. Our priorities include living in a safe place where we can immerse into Latin culture and speak Spanish. Of equal importance is to find a good school for our boys. Of course Bob and I would like to engage in meaningful work, but that takes third priority. We have the rest of our lives to do that. Our sabbatical year is unfolding with grace, intrigue, and divine provision. Our patience is tested and strengthened as we share responsibility in making major family decisions about schools, housing and excursions.

As we begin our life in Ecuador, I look back at three months in Peru with awe and gratitude. Our treks into the Andean mountains offered opportunities to interact with beautiful indigenous people who live a simple, yet rugged life. Again, (as with my travels in Africa), I am impressed by the people’s respect of PachaMamma (mother earth)  for the life she provides. People we have met along the way (through language school, treks, and church) are added to a long list of special friends, never to be forgotten. In “Authentic Friendship,” a chapter in my book, I talk about these unique friendships which are quick to form and slow to unravel. We have spent time with other nomads and sojourners as well as Peruvians who know no other countries. All of these new friendships are treasured.

Onward to the new adventure. I pray for provision, discernment, and God”s sweet peace when every day is done.

Four albums of our past few weeks.
